Learning community 5 organised an obstacle course for several students and teachers to perform at assembly. Each competitor needed to do five star jumps, run around a course of cones, skip through a hula hoop and place a tennis ball on a cone. The competition was fierce - LC 5 were the victorious winners. This proved to be a super idea for an assembly item -great organising and implementation Ms McKendry and LC5.

Moa Team Swimming
The Moa Team swimming sports were held over the course of a week during Long Play, on days when the weather was favourable. Students from Year 4-8 were able to opt into competing in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and/or individual medley. Parents and fellow students supported and cheered on the swimmers in their races. Placegetters in each of the races may then go forward to compete in the zone swimming sports, depending on the times acheived. Well done to all those students who competed in the various races.
Bushfire green and gold mufti day
“What can we do to help?” This was the question West Melton School Year 5-6 teacher Shane Dawson asked himself after viewing the devastation in the wake of the Australian bushfires. Raising money to send to the victims of this months Victoria bushfires seemed an obvious way to support the cause. Mr Dawson organised a school wide ‘Green and Gold” mufti day. Children from throughout the school were encouraged to wear green and gold clothing on Friday 13th, and bring a gold coin donation. Children arrived wearing all manor of clothing, including bright green wigs and green and gold face paint and West Melton School raised a staggering $610, to be forwarded to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.
Mr Dawson was blown away with the generosity of so many of the children and their families. “We’ve had five year olds saying they’ve emptied their piggybank to give all their money, and many donations of $10 or more. The bushfire disaster has really struck a chord with so many people, and this is our small way of showing our support for the victims of this horrendous tragedy.”

Whanau opening ceremony
Inclement weather conditions on Friday 13th February failed to dampen the spirits or enthusaism of West Melton School Students as all the school met on the front court to assemble for the whanau opening ceremony. Students were marshalled into their respective whanau groups, and then welcomed by Ms O'Boyle who explained the order of proceedings. Ms Jackson presented the 2009 whanau captains with their badges, and then the four whanau groups paraded proudly around the court. Let the whanau house competition begin!!
