Year 7/8 information evening
“Hello and welcome parents, board members and Mrs. Jackson” I stuttered nervously. Tonight it was the Year 7 & 8 information evening, an evening where parents and Year 6 children could have a glance at the wonderful opportunities that we have in Year 7 & 8. Hannah welcomed Mrs. Jackson and Ms. Riley and the evening had finally begun.
Mrs. Jackson and Ms. Riley were handing out Post-it notes and pens to those parents who had questions that they wanted answered at the end of the evening. The most common question was “Who will replace Ms. Riley in Term 3?” All of the Room 4 students wanted to know the answer to this question and we hoped that it would be answered.
The information power-point was made from the view of us Year 7 & 8’s that turned up at Room 4 that night. After all of the present students had shared their speeches, the ex-students shared how West Melton School had helped them transition into their current high- schools. The Year 9 students that came were Alice Darry, Lauren Brown, Kylie Duff, Jess Waters, Rochelle Waters and Anton McGeachen. Most of them shared a short speech with us and then Chris Allen came up to talk to the parents about West Melton School from the perspective of a parent who has children currently attending our school.
He showed the parents a short presentation of what West Melton School has in terms of Leadership. Chris talked lots about the important qualities that we learn at West Melton School and answered a few questions from the parents.
After that important information from Chris, Ms. Riley and Mrs. Jackson stood up and talked about the school curriculum. There were lots of questions for Ms. Riley to answer and she did a great job of addressing everyone’s queries.
Ms Riley then announced the new appointment: “The new teacher who is going to replace me is Mrs. Busch, the deputy principal of Branston Intermediate who used to do Art technology and Textiles Technology!”
We were flabbergasted! Mrs. Busch is an extremely nice teacher and we couldn’t wait to see how she would teach us! We all are hoping that she will focus a lot on Art in spare time!!

Recorder concert at WM Kindergarten
Today Learning Community 2 visited the WM Kindergarten and Learning Centre and performed a mini concert of 6 songs on the recorder - Hot Cross Buns, London's Burning, Mary had a Little Lamb, Bobby Shaftoe, Bell Horses and Mister Sun. They performed twice - once to the kindergarten, and once to the Learning Centre. This was a great opportunity for the children in the class to display their recorder skills and perform to a live audience. It was also a good incentive for some of the children to practise their tunes at home before performing to another group of children!
Shapes and Angles in Learning Community 5
In Room 5 we are learning about 2D shapes and angles. We started learning about them last week and have recently drawn some angles outside Rooms 4 & 5. There are 5 kinds of angles you can come and find out by looking outside Rooms 4 & 5. For example, an acute angle is an angle between 0˚and 90˚, and a revolution is a full turn, which is 360˚. We will be doing this for most of the term and if you understand what you are doing with them it can be useful information.

Writer's Club sample - A musical in London!
Last Wednesday I went to the Queens' Theatre in London to see Les Miserable! I was fortunate enough to have a holiday in England for two weeks, where I stayed with my Grandma and Aunt.
I saw Les Miserable live on stage. It is a musical. It was quite noisy. There were lots of characters.
The story is about a man (called Jean Valjean) whole stole some bread. He goes to help a little girl called Cosette. But every man used to be a slave so a war soon rages. In the end all the slaves die except for two. Jarvert the Policeman tries to find Jean Valjean and lock him up for stealing a mouthful of bread.
Les Miserable is very popular. I went there with my Aunty Shani. We both enjoyed the muscial very much.

Homework challenge update
Matthew from Learning Community 5 shared his homework challenge Powerpoint during Moa Matters today. He made a claymation out of plasticine which featured a sequence of photographs. The plasticine figure was very slightly moved and then a photo was taken, and when all the photos are played rapidly in sequence a mini movie is created. Great effort Matthew - we loved viewing your 'Happy Man and his family' plasticine movie!!

Learning Community 9 trip to museum and art gallery!
"Learning Community 9 had a wonderful day at the Museum and Art Gallery last Tuesday 26 May. This visit with LC 10 was part of our Inquiry Learning - "This land is my land". At the Art Gallery, we saw the wonderful Rita Angus art exhibition and were particularly interested in 'landscape' paintings. We were amazed at how she painted ithe same view in many different styles. At the Museum we linked so many different things into our Inquiry. The favourite places were the 'Paua House' and the Maori village and Moas. Overall we had a fantastic day and there were many very tired and happy children, teachers and parents. Here are some of our shots
