Bird Survey at Kowhai Sanctuary

Bird Survey at Kowhai Sanctuary

Tuesday 30th June 2015

As part of being an Enviroschool, some of our Enviro team were lucky enough to participate in a bird survey conducted at the Kowhai Sanctuary. This is part of the New Zealand Aotearoa Garden Bird Survey.
The student had to observe birds that come into the sanctuary for one hour. They had to record the highest number of each species seen at one time.  The results are then submitted online to the garden bird survey at Land Care Research.

We wish to thank Matt Stanford from Enviroschools who helped co-ordinate the survey for the West Melton bird monitoring group.

West Melton School song

Today we were lucky enough to view the new West Melton School song.

Mrs. Adcock & Mrs. Thomson have been working and tuning the song with input from the children of Ti Kouka, the Student Exec and Mrs. Jackson.  Also musical help from Dave, Steve & Mrs. Pascoe, our music teachers.

The students from Ti Kouka have been practicing very hard, and can't wait for the official launch in Term 3.

Thursday 25th June 2015

It might have been a bit frosty this morning, but the day turned out to be brilliant for our West Melton Teams.
The annual Winter Football & Hockey Tournament was held at Brookside Park in Rolleston.
The students had a great day, with many of our teams actually winning their grade events.

We really appreciate the support we get from parents who help out on the day, and our coaches who took time out to coach the students at lunchtime during school.
A HUGE thank you for your time.

Gala Day

Gala Day

Gala Day arrived with lots of anticipation from the students.
There were a lot of satisfied customers, as they "ooh"'ed and "aah"ed over the lanterns, wool letters and cleaning products.
Quite a few biscuits and lollies were consumed before the end of the day.
And many came back for seconds!

In all it was a very successful day, with the Year 7 & 8 making a profit, which will go towards their Wellington Camp costs.
