Y7 & 8 National Young Leaders Conference 2016

Y7 & 8 National Young Leaders Conference 2016

On Tuesday 31st May 2016, we headed of to the Horncastle Arena to attend the 2016 National Young Leaders Day. Once we got there we gathered everybody together. We got our seats and we were all given a NYLD note book, pen and 'Passport to Success' book with lots of inspirational quotes.

They told us there were over 2000 intermediate students there, some had come all the way from Timaru.

The music stopped, the lights dimmed, there was a massive count down, 3,2,1 - our exciting day began.

The hosts ran on stage, Esmy and Christian. They were great, playing games with us between the speakers.

We listened to inspirational  speakers, such as Zane Scarborough (youth communicator), Billy Graham (boxer, motivator and fitness adviser), James Beck, (youth educator for the Parenting Place), Jonny Wilson (Goodtime Music Academy), Maina Alefosio (Spoken Word artist), Emily Muli (singer, songwriter and World Vision ambassador), Brylee Mills (professional dancer and amputee), Tihou Weepu(All Black), and last but not least Avalanche City who performed his two number 1 hits!

We were inspired to be effective leaders. All the speakers talked about overcoming obstacles to become leaders. They all left us with motivational quotes such as:"You don't get to chose what happens to you but you can chose you attitude." and"The best leaders are the ones who do great things and do it with great characters."

The 20 West Melton Leaders who attended were all buzzing at the end of the day.

Amira and the Wizard of Oz

Amira and the Wizard of Oz

Amira was recently selected to perform with the Royal New Zealand Ballet in their production of the Wizard of Oz.

Amira was one of four extras in the show. They were Munchkins who 'played at the beach' and 'danced in the Emerald City'.

The sold out shows were at the Isaac Royal Theatre - a fabulous venue!
It was an amazing opportunity for Amira to dance with the Royal Ballet and see how a professional production works.

Ballet is a way of telling a story using music and dance instead of words. It consists of patterns of movements which have developed over centuries.  Dancers who perform Ballet are highly trained, and Amira is certainly on her way!

Kudos Amira!!

Paige, Equestrian Star!

Paige, Equestrian Star!

Paige F has been practicing and competing in equestrian competitions for awhile.  But this season, Paige and her pony, Merivale Park Serenade Rose (love the name!) qualified for the '2016 Horses of the Year Show' in March.

The annual Horse of the Year show is New Zealand's premier equestrian competition, featuring a range of horse and rider combinations from multiple disciplines.  With over 1800 riders and 2500 horses competing for lucrative titles and prize money the show is a feature on most equestrian calendar.

Paige, her pony and her family traveled up to Hastings. Quite a long trip with a horse!
Paige competed in the Lead rein Paced and Mannered Pony of the Year Class, a strong class of big ponies and riders, where Paige came 3rd!!

Paige then competed in the Lead Rein Pony of the Year Title where she was placed 5th!!

Amazing results, showing how much work Paige and her pony have done.

Past, Present & Future teachers

Past, Present & Future teachers

Thursday 26 May 2016

Today we had a very usual situation...
Our placement teacher, Kelsee Hamilton was visited by her Observing Lecturer, Mrs Faye Parkhill from University of Canterbury College of Education.
Mrs Parkhill told Mrs Sands and Miss Allchurch that many many years ago she had taught at West Melton School in the same room, Piwakawaka 2!!
How is that for a coincidence!
So we had to have a photo taken, with past, present and future teachers.
