On the 19th of June ‘The Secondary School Mud Run’ took place at Motukarara. Four students from West Melton School competed in it :Daisy M, Stacey M, Aydan S and Ted W. We were in the ‘mixed’ team category against high schools. There were 52 teams in our race- actually, it's not a race it's a ‘fun run’ to get kids minds off the earthquakes. Our team number was“852”. It was a 5km run going through mud. 

There were 4 main obstacles -

1: A slide we had to go down with some mud at the bottom. 

2: Barbed wire crawl - we had to crawl through mud that your hands would sink into and there was barbed wire above our heads. 

3: Swamp - a swamp full of mud that we had to go through (and it stunk)! 

4: The finish line - where you had to hold your teammates hands to cross the line or you would be disqualified.

On “GO” we had started...We were off to a great start - well, we were at the back, but any way, we were running and then Ted fell over so we had to stop and support him. We went up a hill and then our first obstacle ‘the slide’. At the bottom of the slide there was lots of mud that went up your pants!!!  Then we were off again. We could hear people yelling “GO TADS” which was our team name because of our initials- Ted, Aydan, Daisy, Stacey. Then we came up to our second obstacle ‘the barbwire crawl’ we got very muddy! Finally we were at our third obstacle ‘the swamp’ it stunk!! 

There it is -  we see the finish line. We climbed up stairs and down a pole and sprinted to the finish when we hear the speaker say “and here comes West Melton School our FIRST mixed team”! 

We had won! We came first! No sooner had we crossed the finish line we were given a bag of prizes which included four beanies, four pairs of running socks, four drink bottles and four chocolate bars!  Then a TV One reporter came and interviewed us about our experience. We were on the six o'clock news!

It was a great experience and I would love to do it again. I definitely recommend it!

No#1 in the Mud!!

UC Education Mud Run - Sunday 19th June 2016

Our West Melton 'TADS' team came 1st in the UC Education Mud Run mixed team race on Sunday! 

'TADS' - Ted W, Aydan S, Daisy M and Stacey M competed against 35 Secondary and Intermediate school kids at the UC Education Mud Run held at the Motukarara Race Track.

This year Sport Canterbury invited Selwyn schools to send a team of  students to compete in the Mud Run.​ On the day there were over 1000 students and teachers competing, in three events: Boys team, Mixed team and Girls team.The students were encouraged to dress up, with a 'Best Dressed' parade before the event started.

The Mud Run is a 5km off road obstacle course through mud, mud pits, mud slides, hurdles and pipes. They are encouraged to stay as a team and finish together.

Our students took this on board with lots self belief, encouragement and teamwork, they ran the whole course, more likely flew over the mud as well!

Thank you to Kathryn Meyers, Jude Morgan and Pauline Scotland (and close families and friends) who organised the team on the day and cheered them on!

Friendship Seat

The idea behind the Friendship Chair is that whenever children have no-one to play with at lunchtime, they can sit on this seat; and someone will come over and invite them to join in with their games.It is hoped children will approach the one in the seat, make sure he or she is all right and ask them to play. It also aims to help prevent bullying before it becomes a problem. The seat can be a key beginning to promoting friendship and kindness in youngsters and help build a sense of community.This includes the values of friendliness, caring, respect, responsibility, valuing difference and including others.

Friendliness: children encourage contact with students using the seat to treat them in a friendly way to include them in what they are doing or help them find someone to be with during break times.

Caring: students approach the student on the seat in a caring way reflecting on how they may feel if they felt lonely or needed assistance on a particular day.

Respect: Students treat all students who access the friendship seat with respect understanding how they feel.

Responsibility: Students understand that it is everyone’s responsibility to monitor and use the friendship seat in the agreed way.

Valuing difference: Students understand that some students may need to use this seat more than others and may feel lonely.

Including others: All students will help include student(s) in appropriate activities after they have been on the friendship seat.

As part of the Kiwi Team science program, the Kiwi Team learners had a field trip to Willowbank.

This term their learning inquiry has been - H2O - Go. Power Up.

The focus has been on -

The world has limited resources - how the use of water affects humans and animals.

Investigating animals and how water affects their environments and lives.

With the help of parents they set off to explore and learn at Willowbank.

It was a wonderful day getting up close to the animals, feeding them and petting were one of the highlights of the day!

Extreme weather!

Extreme weather!

This term our learners have been focusing on 'Extreme Weather / Powerful Forces' as part of their science unit.

Now, here at West Melton we may not have had any extreme weather, but we have had a double rainbow, an awesome sunrise and a very foggy day!!
