Canterbury Netball Tournament

Canterbury Netball Tournament

Thursday 25th August 2016

Well done to our amazing Junior Netball team who competed at the recent Canterbury Primary School Sport Winter Tournament held at South Hagley Park. What a fantastic day had by all.

Our Netball A team had come third at the Lincoln Zone and were placed in the B Grade for this competition. Even though it was cool in the morning, our team played with real enthusiasm and came 1st equal overall. It was great result!

Thank you to Jessie McKee for coming in at the last moment and refereeing for us.  Also a huge thank you to all the parent supporters who came and encouraged the students on the day.

Thank you to Gavin Summerfield for sharing these photos.

Cantamaths 2016

Cantamaths 2016

West Melton School entered one Year 7 and one Year 8 team into the annual competition.

There were over 80 teams in each year group.

Our Year 7 team consisted of James C, Eimi M, Aidriahna C and Jackson B. They did very well and kept neck and neck with the leading group for the first 5 questions, it was very exciting to watch. In the end they finished in the top third with a very respectable 75 points, which is an excellent effort.

Our Year 8 team consisted of Alessandra W, Bella G, Molly L and Max P. This team also started with a flourish and kept you with the main pack however there were some particularly tricky questions that slowed them down. They ended up with 60 points and in the top half of a very tough competition group.

Both teams did West Melton proud by beating teams from much larger schools.

Jump Jam Workshop by Daisy M

Jump Jam Workshop by Daisy M

On the 22nd of August, the Year 7&8 Jump Jamers’ and three Moa Jump Jam girls went to a Jam Jam course at Heaton Intermediate.

In the morning session we went over the Jump Jam 2017 songs and Brett Fairweather taught us how to do the song routines properly.

In the second session, we got taught a new routine and learnt how to lead by using hand gestures.

It was great fun and I learnt some new things.

Best of luck in September as you compete with other primary schools in Bandquest.

Inspirational Quotes from WMI

Inspirational Quotes from WMI

WMI were given the challenge of watching Toy Story and coming up with life lessons they felt were being taught. They then picked the life lesson that meant the most to them and create a digital poster that would be put up around the school to encourage others.

Students then wrote a "why they picked this life lesson and what it means to them". Here are some below:

Believe in who you are
Reason: I chose the life lesson "believe in who you are" is because I have had to do that before. Somebody had told me that I couldn't do something and I was sad for a while but I had to believe in who I was and keep on trying. I think that the word "Believe" is a pretty strong word. It might be the solution to a lot of things.

In the story Woody said that Buzz was not a space ranger and that he was a toy, and he wasn't sent on a mission to save the planet. Woody also said that he could not fly. Buzz didn't believe him and even though he realised that he was a toy he proved Woody wrong and flew at the end of the movie and he said he was just "falling in style"!

I also liked how Buzz said he was falling in style. I want to try and fall in style too, but I think I will fail.

To Infinity and Beyond
I picked to Infinity and Beyond because I think that you shouldn't let someone or something get in the way of achieving your goals/dreams. That your only limit is yourself so aim high! In the movie when Buzz realised he couldn't fly he proved everybody wrong in the end and reached his goal!! I think that in the future this quote will come in very handy.

Look out for these posters around the school!

Apple Tree Planting

Apple Tree Planting

Friday 19 August 2016

Our Eco Warrior Garden Club with help from Mrs V and Mrs Smith, planted the first five apple trees around the bike track.

Holes were dug, stakes were maneuvered in and then after careful positioning the apple trees were placed in their new home.

The planting of these apple trees is the first step in our garden plan to help attract bird life, cope with the NW wind and create soft landing areas.
