Kowhai Sanctuary Trip

Kowhai Sanctuary Trip

Wednesday 30 March 2016

The Eco Warriors had a monitoring trip to the Kowhai Sanctuary on the 30th March.
At the Sanctuary we were working with Matt Stanford - Enviro Schools, Lou Drage - Te Ara Kakariki and Greg Stanley from Environment Canterbury.
We learned a lot especially how to look after the plants during their second planting stage.  We also learned about how to grow Kowhai seeds.
We had to listen and locate the birds to monitor their numbers as well as look for insects where we found a skink.

Isabel's poised to win!

Isabel's poised to win!

Isabel V had a busy Easter competing in the National Ballet Character & Student Choreography competition.
Isabel who only turned 10 before the competition, had to compete against other 10-12 year olds on the day. And in spite of a nasty fall of her bike which interrupted her ballet practice, Isabel showed great resilience.
Isabel designed a dance to a favourite song and showed the judges what she was capable of.
She gained 2 incentive awards, 1 very highly commended, 2 highly commended and 1 commended.

A great experience in her ballet journey!

Fire Drill Practice

Monday 21 March 2016

Today we had a surprise Fire Drill, to remind our learners the correct way to evacuate the buildings and where to meet as well.
The students all arrived in a calm manner and waited patiently while everything was checked.

 Well done everyone!

An Archaeologist on site

An Archaeologist on site

While the diggers have been busy extracting all the old paths and concrete, we have had an archaeologist on site examining the earthworks.

As our school was established in 1871,  the original schoolmaster's house and outbuildings occupied the area now being cleared. Schools generally have a relatively small archaeological signatures and it is unlikely that any building remains exist. It is however possible that rubbish deposited by the school remains in situ on the site.

So far no news of anything exciting...
