LC7's trip to the Botanical Gardens - Casting Magic with Worms

LC7 had so much fun at the Botanical Gardens yesterday :)

When we arrived at the Curator's House, we met Ruth who explained what we were going to do.  First we got to feel some compost.  We have been learning to use adjectives, so thought of lots of describing words when we touched it...

soft, mushy, flaky, brown.

Then we used a small shovel to dig for earthworms to compare them to tiger worms.  The earthworms were shorter and wider than the tiger worms.  The tiger worms were stripy and the earthworms were plain.

While we were by the river, we spotted some paradise ducklings.  They were very cute and fluffy.

Next we were shown how to cover our plastic bottles with newspapers, as tiger worms like to live in dark places.

After that we ripped some long, thin newspaper strips.

Next, we put the strips into some water to make them wet.  We took the newspaper out after a little while, and squeezed most of the water out.  We then had to fluff the paper up, and put it inside our bottle.  The worms were added next.  We put the lids on top of our bottles, and put some soil that contained grass seeds into it.  If we keep this soil moist, grass will grow out of the top.

It was such a lovely day, so we had our morning tea break by the river.

Then we learnt how to care for our worms.

Here are two big worm farms.

When we had finished making our worm farms, we went for a walk through the park.  The rose garden was in full bloom and the flowers were beautiful.

After our picnic lunch, it was time to play!

We all had such a fantastic time.  Thank you very much to our wonderful parent helpers :)
