AgriKids NZ Competition
Saturday 14th March 2015
AgriKidsNZ is for primary school students aged between 8-13 years. They compete in teams of three, with a round consisting of a skills based module, a written exam and observation round.
The aim is to promote the fun side of agriculture with children developing valuable skills . Competitors don’t need to come off a farm, they just need to have a love of the land and be keen to get their hands a bit dirty! While the challenges are predominantly agriculturally based, children from all backgrounds will enjoy the competition.
This year we sent one team - Henry, India and James. Here is their account of the day.
This was the first time that India & James have competed, while Henry competed last year. James was nervous and excited, while Henry & India were quietly confident.
There were a lot questions we had to answer like "How do you feed a dog?", "How do you make a sling out of a shirt?". Then there were the visual skills questions, where we had to work out our answers. Some of them were, counting the rings on a tree to work out how old the tree is, and which milk is which (normal, colostrum, bloody).
Our favourite was identifying which animal parts belong to which animal (they were all in jars and you had to place the correct animal card to the right jar). We got Fist in this event.
The other one was identifying plants and seeds and we also got First in this as well.
We didn't make it to the final round, but had an enjoyable day.
We also had a chance to watch our older competitors compete and it was really cool watching them make a bridge using two pallets, a chainsaw, a hammer, a saw and nails.
Will definitely being doing it again next year!
