"My Town" Competition

 "My Town" Competition

Friday 11th September 2015

This term our Year5/6 have been busy designing a project that would benefit the community. The Lincoln University "My Town" design competition is an initiative from the 'Lend A Hand'  organisation. My Town is an exhibition and presentation of the design proposals created by children from local school groups and clubs of the Selwyn District.

West Melton School sent two year 5/6 teams, to showcase and present their proposal designs to the panel of judges. The event was held Te Kete Ika/Lincoln University Dinning Hall.

Each group had three minutes to outline who they were, what their project is, what community it would help and why they picked it. After their presentations the judging panel asked a few questions on their proposals, Dragon Den style.

"Team Totara are a group of Year 5/6 students from West Melton School, looking to make a difference to our school environment as we go through an exciting school rebuild. Our aim is to create a mural that represents our changing community (from rural backgrounds to urban housing); bringing life, colour, inspiration and a sense of belonging to our environment and community. Our intention is to engage our community through the visual arts, using a variety of materials and textures to create an innovative design all can connect with."

Team Ti Kouka:

"West Melton School is an Enviro School. We believe in looking after the environment in our school and our wider community. Our aim is to have a multi-use outdoor learning space that everyone can benefit from and learn within.This could motivate students and wider community, like our local early childhood centre to be more connected with the environment. We think that an outdoor learning space would be a perfect place to be empowered to learn ‘outside the box’. The outdoor learning space will reflect our environmentally friendly principles, made out of recycled and reclaimed materials like;
  • Wooden pellets to potato sacks
  • Recycled tyres and cushions
  • Flower fountains to edible walls"

Great work everyone!
