Intermediates Hawdon Hut Tramp
Thursday 2 - Friday 3 June 2016
As part of the William
Pike Challenge Awards, West Melton Intermediates went on an overnight tramp to
the Hawdon Hut in Authors Pass National Park.
Everything was
freezing as they left the car park at 10am. It took four and half hours to
get up to the hut, which involved using safe river crossing techniques to cross
many rivers. Half of the walk was in snow, which is beautiful but the novelty
wore off when you have to walk through it with wet feet for two hours.
Cold, wet and awesome
are the three words students used to describe the experience. The weather and
scenery was beautiful and the students say it was great adventure that they
wish everyone could experience too.
Things WMI students
reported learning are:
- It is different cooking on gas cookers.
- Burnt marshmallows don’t taste that good.
- Adults snore really loudly.
- Don’t eat yellow snow!
- Trail mix and nut bars are good food to take.
- Make sure you follow the teachers instructions when crossing a river.
- Pack lightly and don’t take full bottles of tomato sauce and maple syrup!
- Have proper clothing.
- It takes a lot of melted snow to fill a cup with water!
